Tummy Time: It’s More Than Playtime

Tummy time is a vital activity that supports your baby’s development during the early months. It helps build the strength and coordination they’ll need to roll over, crawl, and eventually walk. But for many parents, tummy time can feel challenging, especially if their baby isn’t a fan at first. With my experience as a postpartum doula and nanny, I’ve guided many families through making tummy time a positive experience. Here’s everything you need to know to get started, along with some essential tools and tips to make it easier.

Why Tummy Time Matters

Tummy time isn’t just about play—it’s a critical part of your baby’s physical development from the newborn stage to around 7-9 months. Here are some key benefits:

  • Strengthens Neck and Shoulder Muscles: Lifting their head while on their tummy helps your baby develop the muscles they’ll need to support their head and body, a skill crucial for sitting up and eating solids.

  • Prevents Flat Head Syndrome: Spending time on their tummy relieves pressure on the back of their head, reducing the risk of flat spots (positional plagiocephaly). Some babies who spend too much time on their backs may have to wear expensive corrective helmets.

  • Enhances Motor Skills: Tummy time encourages reaching, pushing, and eventually rolling—all foundational movements for crawling and walking.

  • Supports Sensory Development: Being on their tummy allows your baby to see and interact with their environment from a different perspective opening up a whole new world to them!

When to Start Tummy Time

You can begin tummy time as soon as your baby comes home from the hospital. Start with short sessions of just 1-2 minutes, 2-3 times a day, and gradually increase the duration as your baby gets stronger and more comfortable. When your baby is a newborn, time spent on your chest is also tummy time! Aim for a total of 20-30 minutes per day by the time your baby is about 3 months old.

Tummy Time Essentials

Having the right tools can make tummy time more enjoyable for both you and your baby. Here are some essentials to consider:

1. A Soft, Clean Surface

  • Use a blanket, playmat, or tummy time mat to create a comfortable and safe space.

  • Look for mats with bright colors, textures, or patterns to keep your baby engaged. Play gyms and tummy time mats offer a space for babies with things such as contrast cards, photos, and toys to keep them excited and happy. This Lovevert play gym is a favorite among my clients and comes highly recommended.

2. Tummy Time Pillows

  • A small, supportive pillow or tummy time cushion can help elevate your baby’s chest, making it easier for them to lift their head.

  • Avoid using items that are too soft or bulky, as these could hinder movement or pose a safety risk.

3. Toys and Mirrors

  • Place toys within your baby’s reach to encourage reaching and grasping.

  • Use a rattle or toy that makes a noise to encourage your baby to move their head and eyes and look around

  • Use a baby-safe mirror so they can see their reflection—many babies find this fascinating and motivating.

4. Books and High-Contrast Cards

  • High-contrast images are great for young babies, as their developing eyes are drawn to bold patterns.

  • Prop up a book or card in front of them to stimulate visual tracking.

5. Music or Gentle Sounds

  • Play soft music, white noise, or sing to your baby during tummy time to create a soothing environment.

  • Create a tummy time playlist with tunes that you can enjoy along with your baby. I love and recommend Jammy Jams!

  • A musical toy can also grab their attention and keep them engaged. This Baby Einstein toy is great for tummy time!

Tips for Successful Tummy Time

If your baby resists tummy time at first, don’t worry! Here are some strategies to make it more enjoyable:

  1. Start Slow: Start with a minute or two and build up gradually.

  2. Get Down on Their Level: Lay on the floor with your baby to provide comfort and encouragement.

  3. Incorporate Tummy Time into Daily Routines: After diaper changes or naps can be great times to sneak in a quick session. Make sure to start tummy time when your baby is in a good mood and not fussy.

  4. Use Your Chest: If your baby struggles on the floor, let them lie on your chest while you recline. Hearing your heartbeat and seeing your face can make tummy time more soothing.

  5. Make It Fun: Use silly faces, sounds, and toys to entertain and engage your baby.

  6. Know How To End: You never want to end a tummy time session with your baby crying and upset. If your baby starts crying while on their belly, do not immediately pick them up out of tummy time. Instead, gently roll them onto their back and work on soothing them while they are on the floor. Once they have calmed down a bit, you can pick them up. This helps baby not associate being on their belly with being upset and can make tummy time much more enjoyable!>

Safety Tips

  • Always supervise your baby during tummy time.

  • Ensure the surface is clean and free of hazards.

  • If you have pets, ensure that they will not run or step on baby during tummy time.

  • Avoid tummy time immediately after feeding to prevent discomfort or spitting up.

Celebrate Small Wins

Every second of tummy time counts! Celebrate your baby’s progress, whether it’s a small head lift or a more extended session than the day before. Consistency is key, and over time, tummy time will become a natural and enjoyable part of your baby’s routine. Before you know it, tummy time will be over, and your baby will be rolling and crawling all over the place!

Final Thoughts

Tummy time is a simple yet powerful way to support your baby’s growth and development. With the right tools, creativity, and encouragement, you can help your baby build the skills they need to thrive. Remember, every baby is unique—be patient and adjust tummy time to suit your little one’s needs and preferences while keeping your sanity!
