FAQs

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to their clients before, during, and after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest and most satisfying experience.

Do I need a postpartum doula?

While a doula isn’t necessary, studies have shown that having a doula can extraordinarily improve both physical and psychological outcomes for pregnant, birthing, and postpartum people, their babies, and their families.

Do doulas replace the role of medical professionals or provide medical care?

Absolutely not! Doulas do not perform any medical tasks such as administering medication, conducting medical procedures, or making medical decisions. We work alongside medical professionals like doctors, midwives, and nurses to provide non-medical support, advocacy, and guidance to birthing individuals and their families.

What’s the difference between a postpartum doula and a nanny?

While both nannies and postpartum doulas provide valuable support to new parents, their areas of expertise and assistance differ. A nanny’s focus would primarily be on the care and well-being of the baby or child and may include light housekeeping duties related to the child such as cleaning up after meals or straightening the play-room. A postpartum doula specializes in providing physical, emotional, and informational support to new parents and their families during the postpartum period. Their focus is on helping the parents recover from childbirth and adjust to a new normal. It is common for some families to get a nanny after receiving postpartum care from a doula, and for most, the transition happens around four to six months.
