The First 40 Days

Cuarentena. Satogaaeri bunben. Zuo yuezi. Peiyue. Saam chil ill. These are all the names of postpartum periods and rituals across the world. A 2010 study on cross-cultural postnatal care found that across our world, the postnatal period is defined as 40 days. In many cultures, these initial weeks are revered as a time for rest, healing, and bonding—a time to honor the miraculous journey of childbirth and ease into the new role of motherhood. Peiyue literal translation to English is “mothering the mother.” Unfortunately, here in the United States, there is still much work to be done as we transition from a “snap back” country to a country that values postpartum care and healing. Much of the focus here is on pregnancy and getting you to the finish line of labor. We are still way behind regarding postpartum care, services, and support.

During these precious days, new parents undergo immense physical changes as their bodies recover from childbirth. It's crucial to prioritize rest and self-care during this time, allowing the body to heal and regain strength. Encouraging proper nutrition, hydration, and gentle movement can aid in the healing process and promote overall well-being.

Equally important is the emotional support offered during the postpartum period. Hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and the demands of caring for a newborn can leave new parents feeling overwhelmed and vulnerable. As a postpartum doula, I provide compassionate companionship and practical assistance, offering a listening ear and a helping hand to navigate the challenges of early motherhood.

Bonding with your newborn is a beautiful and essential aspect of the postpartum journey. Skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding, and gentle touch promote feelings of security and attachment, fostering a deep bond between mother and baby.

Cultural traditions surrounding the first 40 days postpartum vary widely. Still, the underlying principle remains the same: honoring the transformative experience of childbirth and supporting new mothers and parents as they embark on this incredible journey. By embracing the first 40 days with mindfulness, self-care, and community support, we can lay the foundation for a healthy and fulfilling postpartum experience.

Until Next Time!
