My Journey to Becoming a Postpartum Doula
Becoming a postpartum doula has been a transformative journey for me, fueled by a deep-seated passion for supporting new mothers and addressing the alarming maternal mortality crisis in America. I began a career as a professional nanny in 2016, specializing in newborn and twin care in Charlotte, North Carolina. Little did I know that my path would lead me to a profession that goes beyond providing services to making a meaningful difference in the lives of mothers, especially those facing disparities in healthcare. One turning point in my journey was the growing awareness of the maternal mortality crisis, particularly its devastating impact on women of color. The numbers revealed a stark reality – an urgent need for comprehensive support for new mothers, especially during the vulnerable postpartum period.
I decided to transition from a professional nanny to a postpartum doula after working with a new mom who developed terminal cancer shortly after giving birth to twin girls. Supporting her and her family beyond basic childcare proved I could make a difference with my work. It wasn't just about changing my career but about dedicating myself to a cause that mattered. My goal was to offer not only physical assistance but also emotional support and advocacy for mothers navigating the challenging postpartum period.
Becoming a postpartum doula required expanding my skill set beyond childcare. It meant honing my abilities to provide emotional support, assist with breastfeeding, offer guidance on postpartum recovery, and advocate for the well-being of mothers in a healthcare system that often falls short. Embracing these responsibilities allowed me to offer holistic care that addressed both the physical and emotional needs of new mothers. I am grateful to DONA International, as well as Jen Chandlee with Luminous Postpartum, who not only trained me as a postpartum doula but offered me a scholarship as part of her mission to usher in more doulas of color. I also trained as a birth doula, to have a more thorough understanding of the entire perinatal period and further my reach for my postpartum clients.
Understanding the unique challenges mothers face, especially those from marginalized communities, has fueled my commitment to making a difference. Every interaction, every support session, and every advocacy effort is driven by a genuine empathy for the women and families I serve. My transition from professional nanny to postpartum doula has enabled me to actively contribute to the solution for the maternal mortality crisis. By providing personalized and compassionate care, I am not just offering a service – I am creating a supportive space where mothers feel heard, understood, and empowered.
I am grateful for the opportunity, not only to do what I love but also to make a difference.
Until Next Time!
